Frankfurt and London: Relaxation, Resets, and Next Steps

By Lapel Stick

After the whirlwind of Paris, Sarah and I spent a much-needed week back home in Frankfurt.

It was a time to catch our breath, reconnect with our routines, and enjoy the comforts of our own space. For me, it was also a chance to hit the golf course—though “hit” might be generous given how poorly I played. Golf Club Frankfurt, my usual haunt, is a stunning course, but even the lush greens and perfect weather couldn’t save me from the dreaded yips. I’m sure a cigarette would cure it but Sarah, ever the supportive observer, offered only sympathy sprinkled with a few well-timed quips about my swing.

When we weren’t on the course or catching up on work, we indulged in quiet evenings at home, sampling new wines from the cellar and discussing upcoming plans. It was during one of these evenings that I finally started reading up on the environmental impacts of AI, a topic that would take center stage at the next conference on my calendar—this time in London. At the O2 arena.

London: Another Lapel Stick

The London conference, focusing on AI’s environmental footprint, promised to be fascinating. Unlike in Paris, I wasn’t a speaker this time, which made the trip feel slightly less stressful—a welcome reprieve in my ongoing battle against the ebbing nicotine cravings.

Still, the stats I encountered were sobering. For example, training a single AI model can emit as much carbon as five cars over their entire lifetimes. It’s a reminder that even technological progress comes with costs, and the conversations at this event would revolve around how to mitigate those impacts while pushing innovation forward. It’s a sobering thought. It’s akin to electric cars. I won’t go into that here.

We stayed at Brown’s Hotel in Mayfair, an elegant mix of historic charm and modern luxury. It really is a must-visit btw.

The service was impeccable, and it felt like the perfect base for our London stay. After the first day of the conference, Sarah and I ventured to Le Relais de Venise L’Entrecôte in Marylebone. The no-reservation policy meant queuing, but the meal—a simple yet brilliant steak-frites—was worth the wait. If anyone can give me the recipe for the secret sauce they produce i will award a very hefty reward. After dinner, the conversation turned to Ibiza. After months of talking, we decided our next trip would be a dedicated house-hunting mission.

Dreaming of Ibiza

The decision to start actively searching for a villa felt like a milestone. We’ve been circling the idea for years, but London’s buzz—and the relative calm of this trip (plus the b—rdeaux admittedly) gave us the clarity to commit.

Proximity to a marina is non-negotiable; if we’re going to buy a boat, it has to be practical. We also want a space that accommodates the whole family comfortably. Sarah envisions breezy, open living areas, while I’m focused on the view—something expansive, with a horizon that makes me go oooh every morning. Also factoring in nightlife options for the kids, ensuring that Ibiza’s famous energy is accessible for them without overwhelming the tranquility we’re seeking.

Wrapping Up

By the end of the London conference, I felt both inspired and introspective. The discussions on AI’s environmental challenges were eye-opening, and I left with a renewed sense of purpose for my work. There was a pang of concern I will admit. We preach environmental issues to our kids, but here am I making it worse it seems…

Back at Brown’s Hotel, we packed up and reflected on the days ahead. Between my professional commitments and our little villa-buying dream, the next few months are shaping up to be exciting.

The flight back to Frankfurt felt quieter, with both of us lost in thought about the future. Well, the new house to be precise.

Another lapel stick added to the collection, another story to tell, and the promise of a new chapter in sunny Ibiza on the horizon. And I only smoked in my imagination!
